Una

Una is a professional-looking, two-column, blog-style WordPress theme with a clean and organised layout and a brown colour scheme.

Its two columns are divided using the guide of the divine proportion. The front page shows the latest post with it’s accompanying large graphic image, followed by three other recent posts with each post accompanied by a thumbnail image. Each section title is supported by a subtitle.

Una has comments and trackbacks divided.

Sketch’d

Sketch’d is a grungy weblog theme with a neat featured post highlight, excellent typography and great attention to detail.

The theme is easy to use, without the need to play around behind the scenes.

It includes integrated social media buttons and auto image resizing.

With a little Photoshop work, it could also be a great base for a unique, customised theme as you’d really just have to adjust the background images and the colours of a few CSS elements.

Price:

The Sketch’d theme costs $US49 for a single licence, or for $US500 you can join the Wordpress Developers club and get a developer’s licence for all their current themes, as well 1 per month for the next 12 months.

Portfolio

Portfolio is a sleek and sexy but somewhat flawed WordPress theme making it easy for photographers or designers to create a site showcasing their latest work.

I say sleek and sexy because it looks modern, has wonderful typography and large images which would create an attractive-looking portfolio site.

However, I say it’s flawed because you can’t link to any of the individual entries and nor do the portfolio items link to the websites being showcased. Neither of these decisions makes much sense.

Nonetheless, the theme author says some of those problems will be updated in future releases, or if you’re able to tweak the design a little you might be able to do it yourself.

Professor

Professor isn’t designed specifically as a photo blog but this brown-tinged, two-column Wordpress theme displays images with such effect that that’s probably what it’s best used for.

The theme author says Professor was designed to focus on the written word, but large images inserted into posts in this theme would get more attention than the headlines, which are offset in the right-hand column, making it perhaps better suited to photo blogging than anything else.

Either way, it’s a stylish and modern theme with a number of nice touches, including featured posts, a widget-enabled footer and valid code.

Natural Essence

Natural Essence uses natural, earthy colours, incorporates a large header image and includes a big footer containing ‘About’ information.

All this makes for a simple, effective Wordpress template that’s Widget-ready to boot.

Pros:

  • Simple, stylish design
  • Widget ready

Cons:

  • Perhaps a little dated and plain for some tastes.
