Doc is an unashamedly minimalist WordPress theme, and that’s where its appeal lies. It’s all about writing and reading.
The theme places all emphasis on content. In fact, its one-column design demands that you focus directly on what’s in front of you, not the shiny icons to your left or right. If it weren’t for the subtle references to comments below each theme, you could almost be convinced you were reading right from your word processor.
Once you scroll to the bottom of the page, you’ll notice all the comforts of a well-rounded theme: blogroll, categories and search box. The beauty of this blog design is its simplicity. It will be a nice change of pace for your visitors. Its effective use of white space keeps it from looking boring or amateurish.

UnderCon is a free, simple theme with a single purpose: to provide an attractive, customizable domain parking theme for WordPress users.
Think of this theme as an “Under Construction” page for the modern web.
This theme is a great solution for WordPress users who already own their site’s future domain, but aren’t yet ready for their site to hit the big time. It offers a sign-up form (powered by Google Feedburner) for visitors to subscribe to receive updates on the site’s progress and eventual launch.
The title, description, and logo are all customizable from within WordPress, so there’s no back-end work to do.

FotoFolio is an attractive free portfolio theme for photographers and designers.
The developer of theme has taken extra effort to make this theme flexible and highly usable, with nifty features such as automatic image resizing and jquery effects to display photos.

AutoFocus is a beautiful free WordPress theme built specifically for photographers looking for a simple way to showcase their work online.
The theme features a unique homepage layout with autosized images and large full-width images on the individual article pages. An optional single-column version of the homepage is also available.
AutoFocus makes great use of typography considering its photo-centric focus. Also, mousing over any of the images on the homepage or the category pages reveals an excerpt of the post content, which is an attractive touch.
Perhaps best of all, no custom fields are needed. Images are uploaded using the Media Uploader, and resizing is handled automatically. The theme grabs the images directly from the article, making this a great theme for a less experienced user.

Sugar Cane is an eye-catching two-column WordPress theme with beautiful typography, great use of images and a distinctive style.
Theme author Able Parris notes that the theme’s strength “is that it makes both long and short posts look great and easy to read”, which is dead right.
Site owners can use the two built-in image classes to have large landscape images span the entire content column and to have portrait images offset alongside the posts.
For those inclined to tweak things a little and make a theme their own, it would be relatively simple to make a few changes to colours and fonts to turn Sugar Cane into your own distinctive web presence.
Sugar Cane is a child theme for the Thematic framework by Ian Stewart. As the author’s page explains: “Child themes allow you to create layouts without touching the source theme’s template files. For this theme to work, you will need to upload both Thematic and Sugar Cane to your theme directory, but only activate Sugar Cane. It’s that easy.”

For designer Rob Goodlatte, Flow is a proof-of-concept WordPress theme, but to my eyes it’s a highly readable blog layout with minimalist stylings.
Goodlatte created the theme to showcase a web design technique known as ‘variable type size’, meaning that as a user resizes their browser window the type size in the main content area changes proportionately. The result is that the key content is attractive and easy to read no matter what size the browser window.
The sidebar column, present only on the home page, is set at a fixed 12-pixel font size so it always remains secondary.
