Mimbo is a classy magazine-style WordPress theme with built-in ad space, thumbnail functionality and an easy to navigate design.
Mimbo was amongst the first free magazine themes released, paving the way for a whole new category of WordPress themes, both free and premium. Although there’s also a premium version of Mimbo, called Mimbo Pro, the free version has been updated considerably since it first launched and remains a worthy member of the magazine-style theme field.
The theme features two levels of navigation (Pages and Categories) and can highlight a great range of content on the homepage. Other features include:
- A script that pulls images automatically from the post body, then resizes them with TimThumb for the homepage;
- Support for sticky posts, comment pagination, threaded comments, wp_logout_url, and the rest of the new features of WP 2.7;
- Featured categories – a custom control panel sets featured categories with a configurable number of headlines, which appear on the homepage;
- 125×125 ad support via the WP125 plugin and its companion widget;
- Multi-level dropdown menus;
- Better custom archives – a custom template that displays posts by month, plus pagination;
- Better author archives;
- Gallery, inline image and caption styling – there are styles for all the various ways you’d insert an image in a post;

Nouice is a two-column WordPress theme with a simple design highlighting posts in a way that’s somewhat reminiscent of a Polaroid photograph.
The theme has a clean blue background and an elegant, modern appearance. It could service almost any kind of blog.

A Minor Incident is a stylish WordPress theme featuring light text on a dark background and beautiful typography.
Posts within the theme are highly legible and the navigation scheme is beautifully styled, as is the horizontal navigation bar, which sits to the right of the header.
This theme pays attention to detail and gets the little things right. It’s minimal and graphic-free.
Note: The download site isn’t in English but the theme itself appears to be created in English.

Magazeen is a stunning free magazine-style WordPress theme that has a contemporary look and feel, and wouldn’t look out of place as a premium theme.
The theme features an interactive showcase of recent posts at the top of each page, using a horizontal panel of thumbnail images. When you scroll over the image the title appears – encouraging your visitors to explore and enjoy your posts.
It also includes drop-down navigation with a difference – with the drop-down menus under the category headings revealing some posts from each category.
Magazeen also has some custom widgets that you can control from the WordPress admin panel to easily change the settings for the latest and featured posts in the sidebar. These panels are among the best-looking available in any WordPress theme – free or premium.

Modern Clix is a beautiful WordPress blog theme built using a grid and featuring a generous use of whitespace and a strong focus on typography.
The theme comes with a range of neat features, according to its release page:
- A strong focus on typography. The combination of leading, weights and type families is essential in any published media. Modern Clix displays texts and images beautifully and includes a set of nice ampersands, by-lines and other type goodies for you to enjoy.
- A strong grid. Texts and images are perfectly aligned to a 960px grid; uncomment a line in the CSS file to show up the underlieing grid.
- An elastic design. Flexible layout? Fixed Layout? Elastic! Modern Clix is coded using EMs, so its layout is automagically stretched when you adjust the font size in your browser. Wowers!
- Golden rectangle. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci proportioned their works to approximate to this rectangle, which has been considered universally aesthetically pleasing. The theme was designed following this principle.
- Full width images and captions. Display images as large as 596px of width, with their proper captions or descriptions. The theme also include classes to align images to the left, center or right.
- Twitter and Flickr integration was never so easy. Just change the sample usernames for your own ones and you are ready to go.
- Extensible and modular. Modern Clix is minimal, but it’s extensible to suit your needs. Uncomment certain parts of the code to unlock gravatars, tags and widgets. Google Adsense is also supported.
- Standards compliant. Modern Clix validates as XHTML 1.0 Strict and it’s cross browser compatible. This means that it works well in every browser in the planet.
