Frugal

Frugal is a clean, three-column theme that comes in two flavours: premium and professional. While both boast many similar conveniences, such as built-in ad widgets, an ebook guide to working with the theme, and threaded comments, the two paid versions do have some extras.

Frugal Premium is a more traditional WordPress theme built with easy customization in mind. It was developed for non-programmers, and most aesthetic changes can be made from the WordPress backend, without having to write a single line of code. But for those who do want to dive into the code, Frugal Premium’s structure is easy to understand.

Frugal Professional was built for the more code-savvy WordPress developer. Although many simple changes can still be made in the backend, larger changes will require working with the theme itself. Further, Frugal Professional was built as a framework, providing the end user with ultra clean code and myriad hooks for custom content.

Cost:

Frugal Premium and Professional are sold as a combo pack. A single use licence costs $US79, a multi-use licence costs $US149, and a developer licence runs to $US199.

Sugar Cane

Sugar Cane is an eye-catching two-column WordPress theme with beautiful typography, great use of images and a distinctive style.

Theme author Able Parris notes that the theme’s strength “is that it makes both long and short posts look great and easy to read”, which is dead right.

Site owners can use the two built-in image classes to have large landscape images span the entire content column and to have portrait images offset alongside the posts.

For those inclined to tweak things a little and make a theme their own, it would be relatively simple to make a few changes to colours and fonts to turn Sugar Cane into your own distinctive web presence.

Sugar Cane is a child theme for the Thematic framework by Ian Stewart. As the author’s page explains: “Child themes allow you to create layouts without touching the source theme’s template files. For this theme to work, you will need to upload both Thematic and Sugar Cane to your theme directory, but only activate Sugar Cane. It’s that easy.”

Mimbo

Mimbo was amongst the first free magazine themes released, paving the way for a whole new category of WordPress themes, both free and premium. Although there’s also a premium version of Mimbo, called Mimbo Pro, the free version has been updated considerably since it first launched and remains a worthy member of the magazine-style theme field.

The theme features two levels of navigation (Pages and Categories) and can highlight a great range of content on the homepage. Other features include:

  • A script that pulls images automatically from the post body, then resizes them with TimThumb for the homepage;
  • Support for sticky posts, comment pagination, threaded comments, wp_logout_url, and the rest of the new features of WP 2.7;
  • Featured categories – a custom control panel sets featured categories with a configurable number of headlines, which appear on the homepage;

  • Multi-level dropdown menus;
  • Better custom archives – a custom template that displays posts by month, plus pagination;

Satorii

Satorii is a single-column WordPress theme with a minimalist, elegant and clean style.

The theme is built on the back of the well-known Sandbox theme, the Yahoo User Interface CSS and jQuery javascript, which makes it easy to customise or add new features — some of them are automatic zebra tables and automatic FancyBox added to image links, plus a useful reply to comments effect.

Plus, it has everything that a complete WordPress should have: support for tags, galleries and captions, Gravatar, localization (so you can create your own translation editing just one file), an image template, and, of course, widgets.

Satorii has beautiful typography and an extremely well styled comments area. The theme is very flexible and would suit multiple purposes.
